Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, and Évora each earned UNESCO recognition for a different reason: Lisbon for one specific riverside monument complex, Sintra for an entire Romantic-era landscape of palaces and parks, Porto for two millennia of continuous urban development along a river gorge, and Évora for a golden-age urban ensemble layering Roman, Moorish, and Renaissance history.
