Why Elevation Gain Per Mile Matters More Than Total Gain

This is the single most useful practical heuristic for judging a trail's actual difficulty, and it's worth internalizing as the number to check rather than total elevation gain alone. The same 1,000-meter gain compressed into 5 kilometers is an entirely different, genuinely severe experience -- extremely difficult, not moderate, even though the total elevation figure is identical. What This Means for Choosing a Trail

The practical takeaway is to treat a park's difficulty label as a starting point, not a final answer, and to check the underlying elevation-gain-per-mile figure directly whenever it's available -- exactly the number Shenandoah's own formula is built around, even at parks that don't publish a formal numerical rating.
