4 UNESCO Sites Across 4 Continents, All Listed in 1999

By Travelog Editorial Team · Updated August 10, 2026

Berlin (Museum Island), Sighișoara (Romania), Johannesburg (Cradle of Humankind), and Ibiza (Spain) were all inscribed by UNESCO in 1999 -- Europe, Africa, and again Europe, spanning five bundled museums, a fortified small town, humanity's richest early-hominid fossil deposit, and a mixed natural-and-cultural island.

1999 grouped four listings that don't resemble each other at all: five state museums on one Berlin island, a still-inhabited fortified Transylvanian town, the world's richest deposit of early human fossils, and a Spanish island recognized for both its sea and its old town.

The Four, Side by Side

The Fossil Record Behind Johannesburg's Listing

The Cradle of Humankind sits within the Sterkfontein Caves, roughly 40 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg itself, not inside the city. It holds "Mrs. Ples," the most complete Australopithecus africanus skull ever found, discovered in 1947 and dated to roughly 2.05 million years old, and a separate find, "Little Foot," the most complete Australopithecus skeleton ever found anywhere in Africa, dated to 3.67 million years old.

Berlin's Real Bundling

One day ticket, €24, covers all five Museum Island institutions, the Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode-Museum, and Pergamonmuseum. The Pergamon itself is currently closed to visitors until spring 2027 for renovation, worth knowing before planning a visit specifically around it.

What This Means for Planning a Trip

1999's four listings span museums, fossils, a fortified town, and a mixed sea-and-land island, four continents' worth of variety within a single shared year.
